New First-of-its-Kind Study Reveals the Economic Impacts and Employment Contribution of Alberta’s Tourism Industry to Provincial Economy
A new landmark study conducted by TIAA reveals that from a job creation perspective, Alberta’s tourism sector creates the most jobs per dollar of provincial government funding. The report presents an analysis of the GDP and employment contribution of the sector to the provincial economy; provides a comparative assessment of the Alberta government’s policy approach and financial support for the sector relative to other sectors in the economy; and recommendations to strengthen industry investment and job creation to help double tourism expenditures by 2030.
The report asserts that doubling tourism expenditures in the province would more than triple the 2021 GDP contributions and jobs. TIAA commissioned this work to raise awareness of the contribution of the industry to the provincial economy, and the impacts that COVID-19 has had on the livelihoods of Albertans in the industry across the province.
